mental的发音近似于闷头，心理健康出问题的人很容易闷头沉浸在自己的世界里。近年来随着社会对心理健康的重视，四六级、考研英语中mental的出镜率越来越高了，比如之前的考研翻译，每个句子都有mental health这个词，大家还要多多重视。除了mental外还有两个词大家往往在写作的时候会按捺不住想用但又常常用错：首先是psychological，意思也是心理的、精神的，然而相比于mental它更加强调心理学、病理学上的意味；其次是大家更爱用的spiritual，同样表示精神的，但spiritual一般用于形容高尚的品质、精神境界、或者有宗教意味的精神信仰。

agency大家只要把它记成有很多agent聚集的地方或现象就行啦。这里讲一下agent这个词帮大家加深记忆，agent有代理商、特派员等意思。比如阿汤哥演的《碟中谍》主角就被称为agent Hunt（汉特特工），《黑客帝国》里的经典官员形象史密斯叫做agent Smith，再比如动画大师今敏的《妄想代理人》英文名就是Paranoia Agent。记住agent之后再来看agency，代理人聚集的地方就是中介、代理处啦；而特工官员聚集的地方则都是政府部门了。此外agency也可表示代理这种行为或者现象本身，商科会学到的代理问题就是agency problem。

但凡玩过尚未汉化过的游戏的同学都见过这个词，option在游戏菜单里就是选项或者设置的意思；这两年股票市场很火热，想必也有同学听到过期权这个词，期权其实就是到某个指定时间给予持有者以特定价格卖出或买入的权利，但是否使用这个权利全由持有者自己决定和选择，所以它的英文也是option。这里希望大家能顺便记住它的动词形式opt（vt.选择、挑选）和形容词形式optional（可选的）。讲到option和optional又不得不提另一个核心词alternative，兼有名词和形容词词性，意思也是选项、可选的，它和option一家有什么区别呢？alternative的特征是Plan B，也就是备选，它所谓的选项是除了主流方案外，安静的躺在角落的那个备选方案，做形容词表示的也是备选的、替代性的意思，而在option统治下的选项们则很平等，没有高下之分。

shrink一词我们可以通过发音去记住它的意思：shrink发音近似湿润，且气息比较紧，很多东西沾湿了之后就容易起褶，而人在畏缩的时候说话才会上气不接下气的，类似这个词的读音。此外我们还可以通过联想法记忆：shrink=shine+ink，把水墨画在阳光下晒干了，纸就会起褶皱。另外shrink在阅读中最常见的用法是表示某些数据的下降或缩水，同学们把它和decline等词一起记就好。例句：The vast forests of West Africa have shrunk. 西非的大片森林面积已经缩小了。

我们现在都管手机上的应用软件叫app，app实际上就是apply的名词形式application的缩写（app这个名字因为和苹果的apple重合了所以最先被苹果使用）。apply一词的难点在于用法上的搭配。首先是apply作为不及物动词的用法：apply to...意思是申请，我们出国留学时常说的申请用的就是apply，申请对象也可以是其他机构或者某种权利；apply to...后如果接某人或某个对象，还可以表示适合某人、某对象； apply for...可以用于表达找工作、申请护照和款项等。而apply作为及物动词的用法apply sth to sth/sb 则表达将某物某种技能应用在特定对象上。
